Adolph
Ficker, 2007, Montagnana Model
Domeneco
Montagnana was an 18th century Venetian maker who pioneered a
slightly shorter but decidedly wider model that was especially
effective in cellos. (Yo-Yo Ma plays a Montagnana). The result
was, as one might expect, a deep bassy resonance difficult to
duplicate in a narrower instrument. Until recently however, commercial
(and often maker) copies while achieving the rich bass sounds,
tended to be weak in the upper register. The Ficker models, using
very high grade spruce for the top, and making the model slightly
narrower than the original Montagnanas, have an upper register
that is as strong as the lower one. The Fickers are attractively
varnished and we put our professional set up on them. |
