In the late
1990's, we acquired some very nice, seasoned wood from northern
British Columbia. We stickered it for another few years, then
had a cello made for us from it. We used poplar for the back
as both Melissa and I like the sound and short break-in time
that are peculiar to poplar backs (a number of Italian makers,
including Stradivari, used poplar for backs). The resulting
cello was purchased almost immediately by a fine youngster who
eventually used it to solo with his youth orchestra. Recently
he traded it back for something very expensive. This cello is
a personal favorite of mine: its projection capabilities are
almost off the map. I've personally tried it in an orchestra,
against a big piano and playing chamber music. It's tone is
lovely: rich and deep, and it can play as softly and expressively
as you want, but make no mistake about its power. A Strad model
in excellent condition. |
