William Lewis and Son was one of the important U.S. violin houses from 1874 until they merged with commercial instrument manufacturers. This Mittenwald cello was made for them and survives virtually repair-free. Many cellist dream of acquiring a cello with a truly old, smoky, Italian sound, the kind you hear on recordings: this comes as close as anything we’ve heard in a long time. A lovely dark plum varnish. |
