In early 2008, we received a request to restore a lovely old cello sent to us from the southern US. It’s a bit difficult to place the instrument, although there are indications it may be Scandinavian. It dates from the middle 1800’s.

Although the cello had been sitting unused for several years, there was no evidence of either climate damage or trauma that we often see in these situations.

Examining the cello, Brian and I determined that although there were numerous repairs performed since its birth, 90% of the work, which probably spanned more than 125 years, was performed by skilled luthiers. The cello had obviously been in the hands of cellists to whom it meant something: probably mostly professional players.
