John Juzek made violin-family instruments in Czechoslovakia in the early 1920’s and quickly learned that it was difficult to keep up with the demand in the U.S. for German-made instruments. He set up his brother Robert in NY to avoid middleman costs and began to contract out instruments to violinmakers that he put his own label in, them ship them to NY. A number of these were very nice, some were spectacular, but we have no way of knowing the actual maker in any of these. Except for this one. In the interior of the treble side upper bout is the label of violinmaker Willibald Raab with the 1928 date. This cello is in amazing condition and absolutely beautifully made. No details were overlooked and the inside is as beautifully done as the outside (without the varnish, of course). The wood is stunning, and the varnish is exquisite. And with all this, the sound exceeds all expectations. Beautiful, woody, complex and powerful. This is a rare find.
