Label: “John Foster Kirk, Billings Montana, 2014.”

We've known John for over 20 years but actually met him in person for the first time just recently when he asked if we wanted to be the exclusive shop for his cellos. That the cellos he put in front of us were literally the two best new cellos we've ever played probably shouldn't have surprised us.

In addition to having made over 200 cellos in his career, John is an excellent cellist and he combines his playing knowledge with his making skills.. The model he uses is a bit smaller than most new cellos today, which tend to the larger Strad models, Gofrillers and Montagnanas. This agrees with our experience which has found that, everything else being equal, slightly smaller models tend to have overall better sound, including on the C-string. A significant number of the extant Strads used as solo instruments are the B-form, Strad's smaller model. John also favors a fingerboard planed with less concavity making the fingering easier. The cello in the photo, as well as his others, is an amazing player, with a full lower end continuing to the end of the fingerboard on the A string.

This cello is truly a joy to play and is as effective in a large hall as it is beautiful in the practice room. His wood choice, varnish and workmanship are all excellent and the experience that goes into his instruments have given us terrific sound and playability. And finally, a new cello, one that is truly a concert instrument, that is affordable. 40315.
