Barbara
Theobald was a fine maker with whom we became acquainted in the
early 2000s. She made several cellos for us, all of which
were both artistically and tonally beautiful, and all were acquired
by fine players.
Sadly, Barbara passed away suddenly in 2005 leaving behind many
friends, colleagues, admirers (Melissa & I include ourselves
in all three), and the partially made cello she was working on
for us.
It has aged in our shop, in pieces, as we slowly brought ourselves
to finish what she had begun. The cello is from a lovely Matteo
Gofriller pattern and we photographed it in the white after we
completed it but before we began the varnish process (it will
be varnished after a c.1723 Gofriller). The label will read:
Begun by Barbara Theobald, Massachusetts, 2005, completed in
the shop of Paul Perley Cellos, 2010.
It is already a truly awesome player, full, throaty, woody, rich,
and even. Well let you know when the varnish is complete
and the cello is ready for sale.
Barbara always wanted her instruments to be affordable: honoring this we will offer her last cello for $15,000.
