Imagine removing the top from a cello, and being the first person to see the inside since the maker, just before he put the top on some 115 years ago. It’s an experience difficult to describe, but that’s the experience we had here just a few weeks ago. There are no cracks in this cello, just a center joint separation and a slight check in the lower block, both of which we reinforced. The instrument has a beautiful tone that comes from 100+ year-old wood. Its sound is smooth, focused and luscious, suitable for professional use. It’s amazing that, through all that has happened in the world since it was made, the cello is in the same condition as when it was born. Except for the aging old the wood. We have never before found a cello this old that has no damage. And it is slightly narrower than many cellos made today which makes it easier to get around.
